Corrosion Inhibitor Under Fireproofing
Protech Global Ltd has formulated a unique corrosion inhibitor for the protection of steel surfaces that may suffer from corrosion under fireproofing (CUF).
Corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) is a specific recognised issue that is estimated to cost hundreds of billions of dollars every year, corrosion under insulation (CUI) and corrosion under fireproofing (CUF) are a common challenge across the power generation, refining, chemical, and other industrial sectors. When it comes to corrosion under insulation(CUI), corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) or corrosion under coatings, most contributing factors are extremely difficult or impossible to control. The power of prevention comes from regular inspection and preventive maintenance.
Corrosion under insulation(CUI) and corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) occurs as a result of moisture penetration and warm temperatures in pipework, vessels and other insulated assets. It often takes the form of general corrosion. Both corrosion under insulation(CUI) and corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) are difficult to detect as they are hidden by the protective layers and likely only found when insulation or fireproofing is removed for visual inspection or when a leak occurs, unless an advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) method is used. Corrosion under fireproofing is said to be responsible for the highest occurrence of leaks in the chemical and refining sectors.
Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) is uniquely formulated to be applied as a liquid/gel format for easy insertion behind fireproofed coverings. The twin-pack system utilises static mixer nozzles that evenly mix the components in a 1:1 ratio allowing injection into holes of diameter 10mm. Once applied the gel will flow behind the fire protection and then quickly set to a solid. Margel VPI 600CUF® is formulated for use in temperatures from -40ºC to +150ºC. Application temperature is from -5ºC to +30ºC.
Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) works by emitting corrosion inhibiting vapour that adsorbs onto steel surfaces blocking the path of chlorides, water and oxygen. Margel VPI 600CUF® is based on organic compounds and forms a monomolecular layer on the surface of steel. This eliminates any further corrosion working equally well on both corroded steel and new un-corroded steel surfaces. Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor will migrate up to 1metre from its placement location and depending on application temperature, will start working from the time it is applied and will typically eliminate further corrosion activity within 14 days from application.

Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) is not affected by damp humid environments but does work best in a hermetically sealed environment to prolong the effectiveness. This can be achieved by sealing with a suitable cladding/enclosure system such as ProTech’s PROCLAD150®, PROCLAD350 Plus® or resealing with fire protection material.

Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) should be applied within the vicinity of the steel to be protected. Once applied Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosionm inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF), it is preferable to have low air movement where the gel is placed to avoid loss of vapour pressure and ensure continued concentration of the vapours to migrate and coat the affected surfaces.
Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF) requires no preparation of the steel surface to be protected. It works equally well on both bright steel as well as corroded steel surfaces.

Designed to be installed directly onto the surface of pipes fitted with insulation materials, Margel® 595CUI is a mid to long term fit and forget cost effective solution to corrosion problems in industry the world over. Margel 595CUI® is formulated for use in temperatures from -55 ºC to +150ºC, with this upper temperature limit currently bearing witness to stringent scientific test.
Test Results/Performance Data
Extensive testing is currently in progress for Margel VPI 600CUF® corrosion inhibitor for corrosion under fireproofing(CUF)and trials are possible on a limited basis by application to ProTech Global.
